Bunting on a cake, with free crochet pattern!

I saw a fun idea on Instagram:

A crocheted bunting on a cake!

And those are exactly the things I like to try, it looks so cute!

You can see the result in the picture below:

 Isn’t that awesome?!

Bunting on a cake, how festive can you get 🙂

These will look awesome on a (children’s) birthday cake, and the bunting is not difficult to make.

The individual flags are connected with a thread to two wooden skewers, which you poke in the cake.

 Curious about the free pattern?

The crochet pattern of each bunting flag is very simple:

1: Make a chain of 8 chainstiches

2: 7 single crochets, 1 chainstitch

3: crochet 2 stitches together, 3 single crochet, crochet 2 stitches together (5), 1 chainstitch

4: 5 single crochets, 1 chainstitch

5: crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet, crochet 2 stitches together (3), 1 chainstitch

6: 3 single crochets, 1 chainstitch

7: crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet (2), 1 chainstitch

then finish.

That’s all!

When you have made several of these, you can sew a thread through them and attach them to the skewers.

What do you think of the cake by the way?!

It’s a fake! I made it with my kids from a cake-shaped piece of styrofoam, and fondant. When you lightly moisten the styrofoam the fondant will stick to the styrofoam. The kids rolled out the fondant and cut out the stars with cookie cutters (and ate a lot of fondant lol!)

Such a fake cake can be put up for display for a long time. As long as you keep the cake dry, the fondant will not go bad (although I would’t eat it anymore).

Isn’t that cool!?

Have fun crocheting and decorating your cakes!
